When comparing two numbers,
use a
greater than
(>)  or  less than (<) sign.

 to always read
the number sentence from
left to right!

How do you compare decimals?

Compare 4.5 and 4.7
Way 1

Use a Number Line

4.5 is to the left of 4.7, So 4.5 < 4.7
Way 2

Use a Grid
4.5
4.7

Since the model for 4.7 has 20 more shaded squares, 4.5 < 4.7

Way 3

Use Place Value

Ones . Tenths Hundredths
4 . 5
4 . 7
4 =4   5 < 7
Since 5 is less than 7,   4.5 < 4.7

 Example 1:  Compare the following numbers

                      $4.26          $4.33

First compare the whole numbers.

                 $ 4.26                $ 4.33
                             4 = 4

Next compare the numbers in the tenths column.

               $ 4.26       $ 4.3
                      2 < 3

Three is greater than two, so:

      $ 4.26  <     $  4.33

Example 2:  Compare the following numbers

                      $3.78          $3.73

First compare the whole numbers.

                 $3.78          $3.73
                          3 = 3

Next compare the numbers in the tenths column.

              $3.78          $3.73
                     7 = 7

Next compare the numbers in the hundredths column.

           $3.7         $3.73

                       8 > 3

Eight is greater than three, so:
