Place Value is the value given to the place a digit has in a number. When there is a 0 immediately to the left of the decimal point, the decimal names a part of 1 whole.

The decimal point separates the whole number part from the decimal part. The 0 means no ones.

You can write tenths as a fraction or as a decimal.

Reads: four tenths

Fraction: 4/10 

Decimal: 0.4

You can write the tenths place value as a fraction by taking the number in that place and putting it over 10.   4/10

 

You can write hundredths as a fraction or as a decimal.

Reads: three hundredths

Fraction: 3/100

Decimal: 0.03

You can write the hundredths place value as a fraction by taking the number in that place and putting it over 100.  3/100

           Trading Base Ten for place value
You can trade 10/10 base ten blocks for a whole number.

                   
10/10 1 = 1.0 one
     
                   
                   
Mixed Number: 1.6
one and six tenths

 

Remember: The decimal point separates the whole number part from the decimal part.
