You can use counters to help you think about division. 

Place 12 counters on your desk.

Example 1

Think of division as sharing. Suppose you are sharing 12 counters with 3 groups. How many counters would each person receive? 4


12 3 = 4

You can use a table to write a division sentence about your model.

Number in all

Number of groups

= Number in each group
12 3 = 4
   
dividend   divisor   quotient

 

Example 2

Think of division as sharing. Suppose you are sharing 12 counters with 2 groups. How many counters would each person receive? 6


12 2 = 6

You can use a table to write a division sentence about your model.

Number in all

Number of groups

= Number in each group
12 2 = 6
   
dividend   divisor   quotient

 

Remember: Think of division as the opposite of multiplication.
