Elapsed time is the time that passes from the start to the end of an activity. 

 

Example 1
Mrs. Freebern's Lunch starts at 12:45 P.M.  If it lasts 30 minutes, at what time will it end?
One Way
Count forward on a clock.

Mrs. Freebern's lunch will end at 1:15 P.M.

 

Another Way
Count backwards on a clock

Mrs. Freebern wants to read the class a book.  The book must end by 12:45 P.M. The book will last 20 minutes.  Find the start time of the book.

Mrs. Freebern should start reading the book at 12:25 P.M.

24 hours = 1 day



                                                                   

Use A.M. for times beginning at 12:00 midnight and before 12:00 noon Use P.M. for times beginning at 12:00 noon and before 12:00 midnight.
