When solving a problem, you must start by choosing a strategy.
Can you explain WHY you chose
that strategy?

Courtney read a problem in her math book.  It said:
" Nicole counted 2 bags of aluminum cans.  One bag had 170 cans and the other had 146 cans.  Each can is worth $0.05.  How much money will Nicole receive when she deposits her cans."

Courtney decided that she should ADD the number of cans together.  Then you need to multiple the number of cans by $0.05.

Her teacher asked her to explain her strategy.

  Courtney answered:
"  First you need to add the 2 bags of cans together.  170 + 146= 316 cans.  Then you need to multiply the cans by $0.05. "

316 x $0.05 = $15.80

Phil read a problem in his workbook.  It said:
" Ella and Evan are shopping for school supplies.  They want to buy 2 notebooks that cost $1.75 each and a pack of pencils for $1.00.  They only have $5.00.  Does Ella and Ethan have enough money? "

Phil decides that he should ADD the supply amounts and subtract from $5.00.

Phil's teacher asked him to explain his strategy.

  Phil answered:
  " I know that I need to add $1.75 + $1.75 + $1.00= $4.50.  Then subtract $4.50 from $5.00."
                      $5.00 - $4.50= $0.50
Yes, Ella and Evan would have enough money.

Remember: You need to explain the why you chose a strategy.
