Measurement

Factors are two or more numbers that are multiplied to give a product.

4 x 6 =

24

 factors of 24

Area is the number of square units needed to cover a surface.

You can use a formula to find the area of a square or a rectangle.

Area is always answered in square units.

Rectangle : A = l x w
Square: A = s x s

Example One:

Find the missing factor of the rectangle using
 the  area formula.
Area = length x width
The length = 10 cm
The width = ? cm
Area = 40 cm

To find the missing factor of the rectangle:

First- divide the total area by the length of the rectangle
40 square centimeters / 10 centimeters = 4 centimeters

The missing factor is 4 centimeters

10 centimeters x 4 centimeters = 40 square centimeters

Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

The volume of a space figure is the number of
cubic units the figure contains.

Volume = length x width x height
V = l x w x h

Example Two:
Find the missing factor of the rectangle using
 the  volume formula.
Volume = length x width x height
The length = 6 ft
The width = ? ft
The height = 4 ft
6 ft x ? ft x 4 ft = 48 cubic feet

To find the missing factor of the rectangle:

First- multiply the length by the height
6 ft x 4 ft = 24 square ft

Second
- divide the total volume by 24 square ft (l x h)
48 cubic ft / 24 square ft = 2 ft

The missing factor is
2 ft

6 ft x 4 ft x 2 ft = 48 cubic ft
