Comparing Numbers
Lesson
Topic Index| Grade 4 Math | Elementary Test Prep | StudyZone

When comparing two numbers,
use a
greater than
(>) ,   less than (<) sign, or equal sign (=)

Remember to always read
the number sentence from left to right

47 > 41

Say:
"47 is greater than 41"

26 < 32

Say:
"26 is less than 32"

158 = 158

Say:
"158 is equal to 158"

54 < 82

Say:
"54 is less than 82"

16 > 8

Say:
"16 is greater than 8"

7,819 = 7,819

Say:
"7,819 is equal to 7,819"

One way to remember
what sign is what:

Think of the 'less than' sign ( < )
as looking like a tipped
"L"

 &

The "mouth" of either sign
always goes towards
the GREATER NUMBER

28 23

18 35

Remember:
Always read the two numbers being compared
from left to right,
and the 'mouth' of the sign always
goes towards the larger number.
