A decimal is part of a whole. 

A decimal is a number that uses place value and a decimal point to show amounts that are less than one.

Decimals can be written to the hundredths place.

Reads: three hundredths

Fraction: 3/100

Decimal: 0.03

You can use a hundreds grid to help demonstrate a decimal to the hundredths place. 
By shading in 3 boxes it is equivalent to 0.3 or 3 hundredths.

Example

Use the hundredths grid to help you write the decimal.

There are 55 boxes shaded.  
By shading in 55 boxes it is equivalent to 0.55 or 55 hundredths.
