The customary system is another system of measurement used in the United States to describe how long, how heavy, or how big something is.

Inch, foot, yard, and mile are units for measuring length.

Length:

12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft)
3 feet = 1 yard (yd)
5280 feet = 1 mile (mi)

Conversions

The chart above shows the relationships between the units of length. You can use the chart to change a measurement from one unit to another unit.
How many inches are in 4 feet? To change from a larger unit of length to a smaller unit of length, multiply.
4 feet =  ___ inches Think: 1 ft = 12 inches
4 x 12 = 48 4 feet = 48 inches
How many yards are in 18 feet? To change from a smaller unit of length to a larger unit of length, divide.
18 feet = ___ yards Think: 3 ft = 1 yd
18 divided by 3 = 6  18 feet = 6 yards
