What is a linear pattern?

Linear patterns repeat indefinitely in either direction along a line.
 

 

Beads on a necklace, the weave of a fabric, and wallpaper borders are a few examples.

Example 1: wallpaper border

The star pattern continues in a line.

Example 2:
basket weave


The in and out of weaving used in making baskets is a linear pattern.

Example 3: scarf

The pattern on the scarf is linear.

 

Example 4: purse

The pattern on the purse is linear.

 

Let's make a linear pattern using shapes.

 

The linear pattern is triangle, circle, triangle, and circle. The color pattern is blue and red.

 

Let's make a linear pattern using numbers.

1, 2, 3, 4, ___, ___, ___

The linear pattern is add 1 to the next number. The next three numbers are 5, 6, 7.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

 

Remember:
Linear Patterns repeat in either direction along a line.
