You can learn how to solve a problem by listening to other students explain how they got their answers.

  Problem 1:

In the basketball game Bob scored 4 points, Alex scored 8 points, Jordan scored 11 points, and Phil scored the rest.  If a total of 34 points were scored in the game, how many points did Phil score?

Katie and Kerri were talking about the problem.
Katie shared:
First I added together the total points all the boys scored.

    4 + 8 + 11 = 23 points
Then I subtracted the points they scored from the total points.
                      34 - 23 = 11 points

Kerri shared:

I subtracted each point from the total points scored.
                      34 - 4 = 30
                      30 - 8 = 22
                      22 - 11 = 11

Katie and Kerri agreed Phil scored 11 points.

Problem 2:

Kayla woke up at 7:00 A.M. She has to be at school at 8:30 A.M.  How long does Kayla have before she has to be at school?

Nicole and Nate were talking about the problem.
Nicole shared:
First I counted the hours.
7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M. = 1 hour

Then I counted the minutes.
8:00 A.M. to 8:30 A.M. = 30 minutes

Nate shared:

I subtracted the time.

8 : 3 0 A. M.
7 : 0 0 A. M.
1 hr 3 0 min

Nicole and Nate agreed that Kayla has 1 hour and 30 minutes before she has to be at school.
