Patterns +  Functions

The mean, or an average, is one way to find a number that best represents all the numbers in a set.

You can add and divide to find an average.

Step 1 Find the sum.
Step 2 Divide the sum by the number of addends.

Example
Lisa's Spelling Grades for the month.
90 95 80 85 75
Suppose Lisa's five spelling grades are 90, 95, 80, 85, 75.  To find out her average grade, follow these steps.
Step 1: Find the sum of the grades.
90 + 95 + 80 + 85 + 75 = 425
Step 2: Divide the sum by the number of grades.

425  5 = 85

Remember: Another way to find the average is to use your calculator.

Press:

  + + + + = 425
425  = 85
