Multiplication is an operation
that gives the total number
when you put together equal groups.

When you Multiply
the numbers you multiply are called FACTORS,
and the answer you get is called the
PRODUCT.

You can multiply two factors in any order and get the same product.

3 x 2
means 3 groups of 2
2 + 2 + 2 = 6

2 x 3
means 2 groups of 3
3 + 3 = 6

+ +
Say: 3 times 2 equals 6
Write:   3 x 2 = 6

+
Say: 2 times 3 equals 6
Write:   2 x 3 = 6

You can also show multiplication using an array.
An array is when objects are arranged in rows or columns.

    (Row 1:)
    (Row 2:)

4 + 4 = 8
2 rows of 4

Say: 2 times 4 equals 8
Write:  2 x 4 = 8

Quick Tip:

Since you are putting together equal groups, you can
add or multiply.

5 x 3
is just like counting by 5's THREE times!
5, 10, 15
5 x 3 = 15

2 + 2 + 2 + 2
is just like saying you have FOUR 2's !

2, 4, 6, 8
4 x 2 = 8
