Compare the digits.
Compare the digits in the next place.

Write the numbers in order from least to greatest.

* 9,501 is the least number.

 5 > 3

So, 15,896 is the greatest number.

Example 1:

Order the numbers 5,834 ; 5,278; 5,642 from least to greatest.

Step 1 Line up the place values.
Begin at the left and look at the greatest place.  Compare the digits.

5,834
5,278
5,642

5 = 5 = 5

Step 2 Compare the digits in the next place.

5,834
5,278
5,642

8 > 6 > 2

Step 3 Write the numbers in order from least to greatest.

5,278 ; 5,642 ; 5,834

Example 2:

Order the numbers 10,475 ; 10,990; 9,468 from greatest to least.

Step 1 Line up the place values.
Begin at the left and look at the greatest place.  Compare the digits.

10,475
10,990
  9,468

9,468 is the least number.
1=1

Step 2 Compare the digits in the next place.

10,475
10,990

0 = 0

Step 3 Compare the digits in the next place.

10,475
10,990

4 < 9

Step 4 Write the numbers in order from greatest to least.

10,990 ; 10,475 ; 9,468

 

Remember: Line up the place values when ordering numbers to the 10,000.
