Place Value is the value given to the place a digit has in a number.

Numbers are made up of digits in the same way that words are made up of letters.


The number 1,234,567.89 (one million, two hundred thirty- four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven . and eighty-nine hundredths) is made up of the digits 1,2,3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Each digit has a special value which depends on its place in the number.


These words are called place value headings.

The number 1,234,567.89 is made up of :
one million
two hundred thousands
thirty thousands
four thousands
five hundreds
six tens
seven ones
eight tenths
nine hundredths

The numbers after the decimal point are a fraction of a whole number.
The tenths place value can be written as 0.1 or 1/10, and the hundredths place value can be written 0.01 or 1/100.

You can write the tenths place value as a fraction by taking the number in that place and putting it over 10. For example 0.2 is equal to 2/10.

You can write the hundredths place value as a fraction by taking the number to the right of the decimal point and putting it over 100. For example 0.67 is equal to 67/100.

Example:
Think about how you would say the number 2.13. What would this number look like if it was written as a fraction?

Think: The digit 3 is in the hundredths place.  Its value is 0.03. The fraction for 0.03 is 3/100.

The number 2.13 can be written as a fraction.  The 2 is a whole number and 13 is out of 100.  So the fraction is written 2 13/100.

Remember: The numbers after the decimal point are a fraction of a whole number.
