Uncertainty

You can predict, or tell what might happen when you do experiments.

An event is certain if it will always happen.

  • There are seven days in a week.

  • Adding 2 and 2 gives 4.

An event is impossible if it will never happen.

  •  It will rain cats and dogs.

  • Going to the planet Pluto for lunch today.

Courtney made this spinner for a game she created.
Using Courtney's spinner, would you predict that it is certain or impossible that you could spin a number greater than 4? impossible
Would you predict that it is certain or impossible to spin the number 2?  certain

Mark put blue and red marbles in a box for an experiment. Suppose you pull out 5 marbles at one time. Is it certain or impossible that you will pull out marbles of only one color? impossible

The most marbles of one color is 4, so a fifth marble will be another color.

Mary has 2 number cubes with numbers 1 through 6 on it.

Using Mary's 2 number cubes, would you predict that it is certain or impossible that you will roll a number less than 1? impossible

The least number you could roll would be 1 and 1 which equals 2.

When you tell what will happen in an experiment, you predict.

If the event will always happen it is certain.

If the event is impossible, it will never happen.
