Uncertainty

Random experiments, like rolling dice, tossing a coin, spinning a spinner, and selecting an item from a set of items without looking, mean you do not know beforehand what the outcome will be.

Experiment: tossing a coin

Possible Outcomes: heads, tails
Events: tossing heads  1/2 or 1 out of 2

Probability
of an event

=

number of favorable outcomes
number of possible outcomes

The experiment of spinning the given spinner involves finding the probability of a spinner landing on different numbers. What is the probability of the spinner landing on number 2?

Probability of landing on the number 2 1/4
Read: 1 out of 4

Probability of spinning the number 2

P (2) = 1
           4
one 2
four possible outcomes

Remember: Probability is the chance that  a given event will occur.
