How do you interpret a remainder in a division problem?

A remainder is the amount left over when something cannot be divided evenly.

There are 17 cookies in the bag.  Mary wants to divide them equally among her 4 friends. 
How many cookies will each of her friends get?


          





Each friend will get 4 cookies.  There will be one cookie left over.
