Sometimes you have to determine the number of items you will need by counting.
 

The fourth graders are going to the park.  There are 75 students in all 3 classes. 
A bus will hold 56 students. 
How many buses will they need?

56

75 students

Since 1 bus holds 56 students,
they will need 2 buses.
The 2nd bus won't be full.

 

There are 40 student going on a rafting trip. 
Each raft holds 7 people. 
How many rafts do they need?

Since each raft holds 7
people, the students will need 6 rafts.  5 rafts will be full.
One raft will only have 5 students on it.

 

Frank is having a birthday party.  He is inviting 32 guests.  If each table seats 6 people.  How many tables will be need?

Since each table seats 6 guests, Frank will need 6 tables.  5 tables will be full.  One table will have only 2 guests.

 

Remember: Sometimes you have to determine the number of items you will need by counting.
