Subtracting Whole Numbers
Lesson

As we've said before,

When subtracting  larger whole numbers,
start in the ONES column and move left.
But sometimes we can't  subtract
from the column we're in,
so we need to borrow from the column to the left.

567 - 385 =

You can't subtract 6-8 in the TENS column,...

So you borrow
one group of hundreds
from the 5 in the HUNDREDS column
.
You now have only 4 left in the HUNDREDS column,
and
add the group of hundred you borrowed to the 6
in the TENS column,
to now give you 16
.

then :
7-5 = 2
(ones column)
16-8 = 8
(tens column), and
4-3 = 1
(hundreds column)

563 - 137 =

You can't subtract 1-8 in the ONES column,...

So you borrow
one group of ten
from the 4 in the TENS column
.
You now have only 3 left in the TENS column,
and
add the group of ten you borrowed to the 1
in the ONES column, to now give you 11
.

then :
11-8 = 3
(ones column)
3-2 = 1
(tens column), and
9-5 = 4
(hundreds column)

REMEMBER:

Always start subtracting
from the ONES column, and
move your way
left !

If you CAN'T subtract
from the column you're in,
you need to borrow one
from the column to the left.
