Lesson
Topic Index | Grade 4 Math | Elementary Test Prep | StudyZone

When subtracting  larger whole numbers,
start in the ONES column and move left.

685 - 324 =

hundreds

tens

ones

6 8 5

3

2

4

  6 8 5
-3 2 4
  3 6  1

because:
5-4 = 1
8-2 = 6, and
6-3 = 3

8,479 - 2,265 =

  8,479
-
2,265

  subtract  each column:
       ones
tens           hundreds       thousands

9-5=47-6=1,  4-2=2,  8-2=6

                                        so,  8,479 - 2,265 = 6,214

Examples:

   958                               865                          758
 - 724                             -153                         -534

   274                               712                          224
