Subtracting Whole Numbers
Lesson
Topic Index | Grade 4 Math | Elementary Test Prep | StudyZone

As we've said before,

When subtracting  larger whole numbers,
start in the ONES column and move left.
However sometimes we can't  subtract
from the column we're in,
so we need to borrow from the column to the left.

But there are times
when the number to the left is a ZERO ;
when this happens
you must to
borrow from the next TWO places to the left.

Examples:

300 - 157 =

You can't subtract 0-7 in the ONES column,...

So you  look to borrow
one group from the tens column.
However the tens column has a zero ( 0 ),

Now you must borrow from the tens AND hundreds column COMBINED ( 30 ).

You now have only 29 left in the tens and hundreds column and ,
add the group of ten you borrowed to the ones column,
now making it 10.

then :
10-7 = 3
(ones column)
9-5 = 4
(tens column), and
2-1 = 1
(hundreds column)   =                   143

500 - 362 =

You can't subtract 0-2 in the ONES column,...

So you look to borrow
one group from the tens column.
However the tens column has a zero ( 0 ),

Now you must borrow from the tens AND hundreds column COMBINED ( 50 ).

You now have only 49 left in the tens and hundreds column and,
add the group of ten you borrowed to the ones column,
now making it 10.

then :
10-2 = 8
(ones column)
9-6 = 3
(tens column), and
4-3 = 1
(hundreds column)    =              138

REMEMBER:

* Always start subtracting
from the ONES column, and
move your way
left !

** If you CAN'T subtract
from the column you're in,
you need to borrow one
from the column to the left.

*** But if there is a zero in the next column,
borrow from the next two columns to the left.
