Symbols can be used to
represent words.

   There are many symbols that you
   see and use every day.

Let's look at some examples using symbols.

When you send an email to a friend, you use an email address which contains a symbol.

bob@yahoo.com

When you read a price of an item you're buying, the price contains a symbol.

$ 6.79

When you get your spelling test back from your teacher, there is a grade on it that contains a symbol. It tells you how many points you scored out of 100.

98 %

When your teacher assigns questions to answer in your science book she may use a symbol to show you which question numbers to answer.

Answer # 1-5

When you buy a pack of gum at the store you will see a price that will tell you how many cents it costs. The price will have a symbol.

75¢

When you want to indicate where the answer will be found in a math problem, you use a symbol to
point to the answer.

2 + 3 = 5
