Patterns + Functions

What is a tessellation?

Basically, a tessellation is a way to tile a floor (that goes on forever) with shapes so that there is no overlapping and no gaps.

Remember the last puzzle you put together? Well, that was a tessellation!

 TESSELLATIONS:

  •    A pattern of congruent shapes with no gaps or overlaps, is called a tessellation.

Example: Using a square to make a tessellation

This tessellation is made using squares.

A pattern of congruent shapes like the one above, with no gaps or overlaps, is called a tessellation.

Example: not a tessellation

These octagons are overlapping, so they do not tessellate!

Example: using more than one polygon

This tessellation is made by using  more than one polygon.

Tessellations can be found in our world.

Borders we use on our walls.

Stain glass window designs.

Designs in our floors that you've seen in schools, stores, restaurants, and museums.

Remember:
Tessellations can be made using more than one figure.
