The properties of addition can help you to add quickly and correctly.

Addends are the numbers added together to get a sum.

addend + addend + addend = sum
Changing the grouping of the addends does not change the sum.
(2 + 3) + 4 = 9 2 + (3 + 4) = 9
5 + 4 = 9 2 + 7 = 9
This is called the Associative Property


Example

associative property

(1 + 2) + 3  

 = 1 + (2 + 3)    

3 + 3    

  = 1  + 5    

6     

 =     6
