The properties of addition can help you to add quickly and correctly.

Addends are the numbers added together to get a sum.

addend + addend = sum

Changing the order of the addends does not

 change the sum.
 
2 + 4 = 6 4 + 2 = 6  
This is the Commutative Property or Order Property.


Example

Commutative Property
   

3 + 5    

     5 + 3
   

3 + 5 = 8  

   5 + 3 = 8
    8   

= 8
