When solving problems, look for a relationship between the units you are using.

Problem:
Abby is making lemonade.  She needs to add 1 quart of water.  She is using a one-cup measuring cup.  How many cups of water will she need?

Solution:
Since she is using a one-cup measuring cup, Abby needs to find the number of cups in 1 quart.  She knows that:

2 cups = 1 pint

2 pints = 1 quart

So,  4 cups = 1 quart

Problem:
Ben has some quarters saved in a jar.  He wants to buy a book that costs $5.00 at the school's book fair.  How many quarters will he need to buy the book.

Solution:
Ben needs to determine the number of quarters in $5.00. He knows that:

4 quarters = $1.00

4 x 5 = 20 quarters

So,  Ben needs

20 quarters
            to buy the book.

Problem:
Liz is baking cookies.  They need to bake for ¼ hour.  How many minutes must they bake?

Solution:

Liz knows that :

      1 hour = 60 minutes

  ¼ of 60 = 15 minutes

         cookies for
15 minutes.
