Associative Property

Addends are the numbers added together to get a sum.

addend + addend = sum

                                                      3      +      5    =   8

Changing the grouping of the addends does not change the sum.

    (3 + 4)  +  2  =  9

          3 + (4 + 2) = 9

                     (6 + 3)   +  5 = 14                   6 + (3 + 5) = 14

   Examples

(2 + 5) + 4 = 11 2 + (5 + 4) = 11

                    (9 + 3) + 2 = 14                          9 + (3 + 2) = 14

Let's look at it another way.

(2 + 3) + 1 = 2 + (3 + 1)

5 + 1  = 2  + 4

6 = 6

              Remember: When the grouping of addends is changed,
                                     the sum remains the same.
