Commutative Property

Addends are the numbers added together to get a sum.

2     +     3  =  5
addend + addend = sum

In Addition
the order of the addends
does not
change the sum (answer).

Add:

3 + 4 = 4 + 3

 7 = 7

5 + 7 = 7 + 5
12 = 12

2 + 9 = 9 + 2
       11 = 11

With the Commutative Property,
there can be more than 2
addends.

 Add:

2 + 5 + 3  = 5 + 3 + 2
   7  +  3  =   8  +  2
  10 = 10

7 + 5 + 4 = 4 + 7 + 5
12 + 4 = 11 + 5
16  =  16

3 + 6 + 10  = 6 + 10 + 3
     9 + 10  = 16 + 3
            19  =  19

REMEMBER :

Changing the order of the addends
does NOT change the
sum
.
