Commutative Property

Addends are the numbers added together to get a sum.

2     +     3  =  5
addend + addend = sum

Changing the order of the addends does not change the sum.

5 + 3 + 2   = 10 3 + 5 + 2 = 10
(5 + 3) + 2 = 10 (3 + 5) + 2 = 10
(  8  ) + 2 = 10 (  8  ) + 2 = 10

Look at another example.

             3 + 6 + 4 = 13                     6 + 4 + 3 = 13

            (3 + 6) + 4 = 13                 (6 + 4) + 3 = 13

               ( 9 )  + 4 = 13                    ( 10 ) + 3 = 13

Let's look at one more.

             5 + 2 + 9 = 16                          9 + 5 + 2 = 16

          (5 + 2) + 9 = 16                        (9 + 5) + 2 = 16

              ( 7 ) + 9 = 16                           ( 14 ) + 2 = 16

Remember: Changing the order of addends does not
                                      change the sum.
