We can compare two things to see how they are
alike and different.

Look at the picture of the bears.
What is alike?
Both bears are wearing glasses.
Both bears have a blue bow.

What is different?
One bear has a pencil in the right hand,
while the other bear has a pencil in the left hand.

We can compare math ideas in the same way.

3 x 4 = 12            3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

Look at the two equations.
What is alike?
Both equations show ways to combine a group of 3s.
Both equations have an answer of 12.

What is different?
One equation uses multiplication to group four 3s,
while the other equation uses addition.

Compare another math idea.

Look at the two graphs.
What is alike?
Both graphs have the same title.
Both graphs display the same data.

What is different?
One graph is a bar graph,
while the other graph is a pictograph.

Compare these geometric figures.

Look at the square and the cube.
What is alike?
Both are geometric figures.
Both contain a square.

What is different?
The square is a one-dimensional shape,
while the cube is a 3-dimensional figure.
