We can look at ideas in math to see how they are alike and different.

How are these math ideas alike?

  1.         4 x 6

             4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4

 
  Both expressions represent 24

  Both expressions have a product of 24
 

  2.              and       
  Both are pyramids

  Both have a face that is a circle.
 

  3.             5 x 4             

                 10 x 2

 
  Both have a product of 20

  Both have a factor of 2
 

How are these math ideas different?

  4.       and  

 
  One has square faces, the other

  has rectangular faces

  They both have 6 faces
 

  5.  Paul says he is 52 inches tall. 

       Pete says he is 140 cm tall.  
 
  Both centimeters and inches measure

  height

  One is metric measurement,
  the other is customary measurement
 

  6.  The product of 4 and 5 is 20.

       The sum of 4 and 5 is 9.
 
 
Both 20 and 9 represent products.

  Product is the result of multiplication
  and sum is the result of addition.
