Numbers are made up of digits in the same way that words are made up of letters.

The number...

,

(two thousand five hundred seventy-six)

is made up of the digits   2, 5, 7, and 6. Each digit has a special value which depends on its place in the number.

thousands

hundreds

tens

ones

2

5

7

6

2 in the thousands place = 2,000

5 in the hundreds place = 500

7 in the tens place = 70

6 in the ones place = 6

A number is composed by adding those values together.

2000
  500
    70
+     6
2,576

   OR      2,000 + 500 + 70 + 6 = 2,576

A number is decomposed when you start with the number

,

and you give the value of each digit in the number.

                      5,312 = 5,000 + 300 + 10 + 2

Compose these numbers.

1.  2,000 + 600 + 10 + 2

2.  9,000 + 500 + 40 + 6

3.  8,000 + 300 + 70 + 5
