Solving Problems can be easy when you use manipulatives.

A manipulative is an object you use to represent,
or stand for, a number.
You can use many different  kinds of objects.
For example, you can use:

place value blocks

pattern blocks

pencils

Let's solve some problems using manipulatives.

Sam had 16 video games. Last week was his birthday and he got 5 more games.  How many games does he have now?    + =
       16      +     5     =  21
Patty had a candy bar and she gave ½ of it to her brother.  How much does she have left?  - =
     1     -     ½     =      ½
Bob has 6 books and he loans Tim 2 books.  How many books does Bob have left? ber174-1.gif
