Talking
about a problem
with a friend,
can help you to solve
the problem.
Some problems may be hard to understand. Maybe you don't
understand the question. Perhaps
you aren't sure of what process to use. Discussing the problem
with others might help!
Follow these important steps.
Step 1: Understand the problem.
Talk it over
with others in your group.
Step 2: Make a plan.
Step 3: Carry out the plan.
Step 4: Look Back.
Examples:
Ben
bought 3 pencils for 25 ¢ each and 4 pens for $1.00 each. How
much did he spend?
$ .25
$1.00
Step 1:
Discuss the
problem with your
group. Make sure you
understand what it is asking.
Step 2:
Multiply
$.25 by 3 and
$1.00 by 4.
Step 3:
$ .25 x 3 =
$ .75
$1.00 x 4 = $4.00
$ .75 + $4.00 = $4.75
Step 4:
Ben will
spend $4.75 on pencils
and pens.
Katherine
has an appointment at
4:00 P.M. and she wants to leave
her house 1 hour before the
appointment. What time should
she leave the house?
Step 1:
Discuss the
problem with your
group. Make sure you
understand what it is asking.
Step 2:
Subtract 1
hour from 4:00
Step 3:
4:00 - 1
hour = 3:00
Step 4:
Catherine
should leave her
house at 3:00 P.M. since 1 hour
after 3:00 would be 4:00 P.M.
Katherine
and Ben are saving

Add together
what Ben and
Katherine have each saved.

$28.00 +
