Division
is an operation that tells : 
how many groups
      or  how many in each group.

    The number you Divide by is called the DIVISOR.

12 3 = 4

The number you are dividing is called
 the
DIVIDEND.

             4
     3 ) 1 2     dividend

       12 3 = 4
           dividend

 
And the answer is called 
the
QUOTIENT.

             4    quotient
     3 ) 1 2

       12 3 = 4
                                     quotient

10 statues are divided into 2 equal groups.

              5
         2 ) 1 0
    10 2 = 5

There are 5 statues in each group.


       Examples:

9 3 =
This means that we want to divide 
 
9 into 3 equal groups.

9 3 = 3

If Mike had 12 marbles and he wanted to share
them equally with
4 of his friends, how many
marbles would each person get?

12 4 =

          friend # 1                   friend # 2                  friend # 3                 friend # 4    

12 4 = 3 
                                   
marbles each

                 Remember       15    3  =  5
  dividend divisor = quotient
