A fraction shows a part of a whole. The numerator represents the part, and the denominator represents the whole.

     The top number is the numerator. It names the  shaded parts.

   The bottom number is the denominator.  It shows the total parts.

   
   

 

    

    Numerator  -     1 of the sections is shaded blue.
 

  Denominator  -    4 sections in all

              

Fractions can also show a part of a group or part of a set.

 


 4 is the numerator and stands for the number of tall mushrooms.

  10 is the denominator and stands for the number of total mushrooms.
 

    

      

 

 

 

   3 is the numerator and stands for
      the number of sitting bears.

   5 is the denominator and stands    
      for the number of total bears.
