You can learn how to solve a problem by listening to other students explain how they got their answers.

The students in Mrs. Thompson's class were working
in groups on math problems.
As they read each problem, students shared their
ideas for how they would solve the problems.

  Problem 1:

  Pete went fishing today. He
caught 3 fish in the morning. Then
he caught 3 fish in the afternoon.
He caught 2 more fish yesterday
than he caught today. How many
  fish did he catch yesterday?

  Pam shared:
I drew pictures of the fish.
I drew 3 fish for the morning,

and 3 fish for the afternoon.

Then I drew 2 more fish for
       yesterday.

I counted all the fish and got an
       answer of
8 fish.

Sue shared:
       I added the numbers together.
              3 + 3 + 2 =
8 fish

  Problem 2:

Super Duper Grocery Store had a
special this week. For every 3 lbs
of apples you bought, you got a
free lb of bananas. Mrs. Hall got
4 lbs of bananas for free. How
many lbs of apples did she buy?

  Bobby shared:

I would draw a table.
      apples       3      6      9
12
     bananas      1      2
 3       4

  Billy shared:

  I would draw a picture.

Bobby and Billy agreed that Mrs. Hall
      bought
12 lbs of apples to get 4 free
      lbs of bananas.

  Problem 3:

Nancy went to Wal Mart to buy
  some school supplies. She bought
pencils and a notebook. The total
came to $8.70. Nancy gave the
cashier a ten dollar bill. What was
  her change?

  Tim shared:
I would find the change by adding on,
       starting with $8.70.
            $8.70 +
30¢   =  $9.00
            $9.00 +
$1.00 = $10.00
       Her change is
$1.30.

  Tom shared:
        I would use subtraction.
                     $10.00
                   -    8.70

$  1.30
