There is more than one way
to solve a problem.

To solve a problem you need to follow these important steps:
                       Step 1:  Understand the problem.
                       Step 2:  Make a plan.

This is were you choose the best strategy.
Step 3:  Carry out the plan.
                       Step 4:  Look Back.

Let's look at some strategies to solve a problem.

Billy is only allowed to watch 45 minutes of television each day.  One afternoon, he watched 36 minutes of television. How many more minutes of television is Billy allowed to watch for the rest of the day?

  Strategy 1 :  Counting On
    36 plus
4 more = 40
    40 plus
5 more = 45

4 + 5 = 9 minutes

  Strategy 2 : Counting Back
    45 take away
5 = 40
    40 take away
4 = 36

5 + 4 = 9 minutes

   Strategy 3 : Estimation
    36 is close to
35

45 - 35 = 10
    Billy has
about 10 minutes left.

Let's try some more strategies to solve a problem.

Abby collected cans for her band trip.  She collected 173 last week and 216 this week.  How many cans does she have now?

Strategy 1 : Add Hundreds, Tens, Ones
     Combine hundreds → 100 + 200 =
300
     Combine tens → 70 + 10 =
80
     Combine ones → 3 + 6 =
9
     300
+ 80 + 9 = 389 cans

  Strategy 2 : Use representation
         173
 and  216

 equals

                  or
389
