There is math in the
books that you read.

Look at some math problems found in literature.

"And we need Mary and Joseph, the
three Wise Men, and the Angel of the
 Lord."

In this excerpt from The Best Christmas
 Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson,
Mother is assigning parts in the play.

How many children will she need for
 these parts?

Use place value blocks to help solve the
  problem:

  Mary
  Joseph
  3 Wise Men
  Angel

  = 6 children

"School ended on June 24. And by luck,
my mother had five people signed up for
a trek the very next day."

This excerpt is from A Llama in the
 Family by Johanna Hurwitz.

On what date will the trek begin?

Looking at the calendar you can see that
 the day after
June 24 will be June 25.

"In the farmyard, Fly, the black-and-
white collie, was beginning to train her
 four puppies."

In the book Babe, the Gallant Pig by Dick
King-Smith, how many collies did the
 farmer have in all?

  Fly

  Puppies

  +   = 5

  The farmer has 5 collies.
