When doing math problems,  
    vocabulary is important. 
Words are used to help communicate problems to one another.

These are some examples of math vocabulary words and definitions.

  Term

  Definition

  addend  
  A number added to find a sum.
  sum   The number that is the result of adding two
  or more addends.
  difference   The number that is the result of subtracting  
  one number from another.
  factors   Numbers that are multiplied together to
  obtain a product.
  product   The number that is the result of multiplying two or more
  factors.
  fact family
  A group of related facts using the same set of numbers.
  graph
  A diagram representing  connections among  
  two or more things.
  fraction
  A way to compare equal parts to a whole.
  estimate
  To find a number that is close to an exact answer.
  operation  
  Addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
  subtraction
  An operation that tells the difference between two numbers.
  addition
  An operation that tells the total number when you put together
  two or more numbers.

  multiplication
 
  An operation that tells the total number when you put together
  equal groups.
  division   An operation that tells how many groups there are or how
  many are in each group.
  digits
  The symbols used to show numbers.

We see math vocabulary words in problems.


   
 

 
  Justin walks his dog every day. If they walk 3 miles
  each day, estimate the number of miles they will walk
  at the end of 4 weeks.

  Justin and his dog will walk about 80 miles.

 


  Beth and Barb were collecting cans to help raise
  money for the new playground. Beth collected 46  
  cans and Barb collected 58 cans. Can you find the
  number of cans they collected together by finding
  the sum of 46 and 58?

  46 + 58 = 104
  The sum of 46 and 58 is 104.
 

  Paul and Patty both walk to school. Paul walks 9 blocks and
  Patty walks 6 blocks. How many more blocks does Paul walk
  than Patty? Find the difference.

  9 - 6 = 3
  The difference of 9 and 6 is 3.
