Numbers & Numeration/Decimals

Decimals can be used to show tenths and hundredths when using metric measure.  A meter stick is often used to measure objects around us.

There are 10 decimeters in one meter stick.  Each decimeter
would be written as 0.1 (one tenth) of a whole meter.

Two decimeters would be 0.2 (two tenths)

Choose the correct way to write each metric measure in decimals as part of a meter:

That picture is four decimeters (four tenths of a meter) on each side.

0.04            0.4         0.14           4.0

There are five decimeters (five tenths of a meter) in a half meter.

0.5            0.05         0.15           5.0

One decimeter (one tenth of a meter) is equal to ten centimeters.

  1.0           0.01         0.001           0.1

The stick measured nine decimeters (nine tenths of a meter.)

  0.19           0.09         0.9           9.0

The paper was two decimeters (two tenths of a meter) wide.

  0.2             0.02         0.12           2.0

There are 100 centimeters in one meter stick.  Each centimeter would be written as 0.01 (one hundredth) of a whole meter.

Examples:  five centimeters would be 0.05
                 seventeen centimeters would be 0.16

Choose the correct way to write each metric measure in decimals as part of a meter:

The drawer is sixty seven centimeters (sixty seven hundredths of a meter) wide.

  0.067             6.7         0.67

I measured forty five centimeters (forty five hundredths of a meter) on my meter stick.

  0.45             0.045        4.5

Twelve inches is about thirty centimeters (thirty hundredths of a meter.)

  0.030             0.30        3.0

My finger is almost eight centimeters (eight hundredths of a meter) long.

  0.8             0.008        0.08

The box is ninety eight centimeters (ninety eight hundredths of a meter) long.

  0.98             9.8        0.098
