Restating a problem helps you to plan how to find a solution.

                 To solve a problem you need to follow
                             these important steps:

                       Step 1:  Understand the problem.
                            
State the problem in your own words.
                       Step 2:  Make a plan.
                       Step 3:  Carry out the plan.
                       Step 4:  Look Back.

Mary found 10 flipflops in her closet to wear to
the beach this summer. 
How many pairs of flipflops does she have?


 

Step 1: How can Mary seaparate her
                 flipflops into groups of 2?
Step 2: Divide ten by 2.
Step 3: 10 ÷ 2 = 5
Step 4: Mary will have 5 pairs of
                 flipflops to take to the beach.

 
               


 

If Ralph spent $6.50 to see a movie and $1.25 for popcorn, how much did he spend in all?

Step 1: What did Ralph spend for
                 popcorn and admission to the
                 movie?
Step 2: Add together the price of
                  admission and the price of
                  popcorn.
Step 3: $6.50 + $1.25 = $7.75
Step 4: Ralph spent $7.75 at the
                  movies.


 

The football stadium can seat 1,250 people on the home side of the field, and 1,460 people of the visitor's side.  How many people can the stadium seat?

 

Step 1: What is the number of people
                 who can sit on the home side
                 and visitor's side in all?
Step 2: Add together the number of
                  seats on one side to the
                  number of seats on the other
                  side.
Step 3: 1,250 + 1,460 = 2,710 people
Step 4: The football stadium can seat
                  2,710 people.

 


 

Bob spent 20 minutes doing math homework and  15 minutes studying spelling.  How much time did he spend on his homework?

Step 1: How many minutes did Bob
                 spend doing math and studying
                 spelling?
Step 2: Add together the number of
                 minutes spent on spelling and
                 math.
Step 3: 20 + 15 = 35 minutes
Step 4: Bob spent 35 minutes on his
                  homework.
