Looking at pictures and diagrams can help to solve problems in math.
Let's look at some examples.
There are 5 apples in the tree
in Abby's backyard. If Abby picks 2 apples, how many are left?
5 - 2 = □ □ = 3
Ben has 3 goldfish in his fish bowl.
Then he adds one more fish.
How many fish does he have now?
3 + 1 = □ □ = 4
Bonnie's class visited a farm.
They saw 5 pigs eating at the trough. 3 pigs were on one side. How many pigs were eating on the other side?
3 + □ = 5 □ = 2
4 ducks were swimming on the pond. If 3 of the ducks are ducklings, how many were adults?
3 + □ = 4 □ = 1
