It's important to completely understand a problem before you start to solve it.

                  To solve a problem you need to follow
                             these important steps:

                       Step 1:  Understand the problem.

Restate the problem to completely understand it.

Identify what the problem is asking.
                       Step 2:  Make a plan.
                       Step 3:  Carry out the plan.

Find the solution.
                       Step 4:  Look Back.

Ben has 18
      sweatshirts.
  He wants to pack them into
      boxes.
  He wants each box to hold 3
      sweatshirts.
  How many boxes does Ben
      need?

 Step 1: Ben wants to separate a
       group of 18 into groups of 3.

  Step 2:  To solve the problem you
       need to divide.  18
÷ 3.

 Step 3: You can divide by repeated
       subtraction.  18 -
3 = 15
                             15 -
3 = 12
                             12 -
3 = 9
                               9 -
3 = 6
                               6 -
3 = 3
                               3 -
3 = 0

 Step 4: You can remove six 3s from
       18.  So he will need
6 boxes.

  The third grade
       students visited the zoo.
  They learned that there used
       to be 8 kinds of tigers.
  3 of the kinds have become
       extinct.
  How many kinds of tigers are
       left?

 Step 1: How many of the 8 kinds of
                  tigers remain, if 3 kinds
                  became extinct.

 Step 2: To solve the problem you
                   need to subtract,
8 - 3

 Step 3: You can subtract by "adding
                   on".
                           3 +
? = 8

 Step 4: 3 + 5 = 8

There are 5 kinds of tigers left.
