After solving a problem,
go back and check your answer
in the problem.
Does your answer make sense?

                  To solve a problem you need to follow
                             these important steps:

                       Step 1:  Understand the problem.
                       Step 2:  Make a plan.
                       Step 3:  Carry out the plan.
                       Step 4:  Look Back.

Check to see if your answer makes sense.

Let's look at some examples:

The state fair had a special day.
For
$3.75 you could ride all afternoon.  Liz went with her friends and paid with a $5.00 bill.

What was her change?

Step 1: Find the change from $5.00 if the
             price is $3.75.

Step 2: Subtract $3.75 from $5.00.

Step 3: $5.00 - $3.75 = $1.25

Step 4: Is $1.25 a reasonable answer?

  Yes, $3.75 + a quarter ($.25) is
                     $4.00.
             $4.00 + a dollar more is $5.00.

Liz got to the fair at 12:00 P.M.
and left at
4:00 P.M.
How many hours was
she at the fair?

Step 1: Find the number of hours between
             12:00 P.M. and 4 P.M.

Step 2: Count the number of hours
             between 12:00 and 4:00.

Step 3: 12:00 to 1:00  {1 hour}
               1:00 to 2:00  {1 hour}
               2:00 to 3:00  {1 hour}
               3:00 to 4:00  {1 hour}

4 hours

Step 4: Is 4 hours a reasonable answer?

 Yes, 12:00 + 4 hours is 4:00 P.M.

Liz rode on the ferris wheel 4 times, the roller coaster 6 times, the teacups 3 times, and the bumper cars 5 times.
How many rides did Liz go on?

Step 1: Find the total number of rides
             that Liz rode.

Step 2: Add together the numbers for
             each ride.

Step 3: 4 + 6 + 3 + 5 + = 18 rides

Step 4: Is 18 rides a reasonable answer?

  Yes, 4 + 6 = 10
                     3 + 5 =  8

18 rides in 4 hours is
                                                reasonable.
