Observing Number Patterns

Identifying repeated patterns can help you
add and subtract larger numbers.
Look for repeated patterns using place value patterns.

5 + 4 = 9 50 + 40 = 90 500 + 400 = 900
5 ones + 4 ones = 9 ones 5 tens + 4 tens = 9 tens 5 hundreds + 4 hundreds = 9 hundreds

What numbers are the same in each number sentence?
The numbers that are repeated are  5,4, and 9.

What is different in each number sentence?
It's the number of 0's. There is no zero when you add ones. There is one zero added to each number when you are
adding tens, and two zeros added to each number
when you are adding hundreds.

    Since 5 +4 = 9,
Then  50 + 40 = 90
  and 500 + 400 = 900.

8 - 2 = 6 80 - 20 = 60 800 - 200 = 600
8 ones - 2 ones = 6 ones 8 tens - 2 tens = 6 tens 8 hundreds - 2 hundreds = 6 hundreds

What numbers are the same in each number sentence?
The numbers that are repeated are  8, 2, and 6.

What is different in each number sentence?
It's the number of 0's. There is no zero when you add ones. There is one zero added to each number when you are subtracting tens, and two zeros added to each number when you are subtracting hundreds.

Since 8 - 2 = 6,
Then  80 - 20 = 60
  and 800 - 200 = 600.
