When subtracting numbers

line up place value columns.
hundreds tens ones

Then subtract each column starting with the
ones
then....tens
then....hundreds

567 - 385 =

Step 1
Subtract the ones.
7 - 5 = 2

Step 2
Subtract the tens.
You can't subtract
6 tens - 8 tens
So, regroup 5 hundreds as 4 hundreds & 10 tens.

Step 3
Subtract the hundreds.
4 hundreds - 3 hundreds
= 1 hundred

941 - 528 =

Step 1
Subtract the ones.
You can't subtract 1 - 8
So, you must regroup
4 tens as 3 tens & 10 ones

Step 2
Subtract the tens.
3 tens - 2 tens = 1 ten

Step 3
Subtract the hundreds.
9 hundreds - 5 hundreds
