When subtracting numbers

line up place value columns.
hundreds tens ones

685 - 324 =

hundreds	tens	ones
6	8	5
3	2	4

Then subtract each column starting with the
ones
then....tens
then....hundreds

6 8 5
-3 2 4
3 6 1

5 - 4 = 1
8 - 2 = 6
6 - 3 = 3

479 - 265 =

4 7 9
- 2 6 5

9 - 5 = 4
7 - 6 = 1
4 - 2 = 2

so, 479 - 265 = 214
