Do you know how to count by 5's?
5...10...15...20...25...
Do you know how to count by 1's?
1...2...3...4...

If you do, telling time will be a piece of cake!

Let's look at this clock:

Look at the lines along the outside edge of the clock.  These lines represent minutes.  Each time the minute hand moves to the next line, one minute has passed.

Now let's look at the numbers around the outside edge of the clock.

We learned before that there are five minutes between each number.

Let's look at some examples to learn the last step.

We start by reading the hour hand (in red) which is 4.

Then we read the
minute hand (in blue) by counting the lines
. . .1. . .2. . .3!

So it is 4:03.

We could also say three minutes after four.

Lets' try another one!

We could also say forty-one minutes after nine.

Will you do another one with me?

We could also say twelve minutes after five.

Yes, you've got it!

Now you are ready to practice!

Come with me and click on the clock below to practice this lesson.
